Redevelopment of the Japanese Water Garden on Thessaloniki’s Waterfront
The redeveloped Japanese Water Garden on Thessaloniki’s New Waterfront was delivered in full operation by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, thanks to a donation from JTI. The garden represents a distinctive example of Japanese aesthetics and philosophy, harmoniously integrated into the Mediterranean landscape and adapted to the city’s unique characteristics.
The redevelopment focused on enhancing the garden’s aesthetic and ecological value through new plantings of water-loving species, the reconfiguration of planting beds, and improvements to the surrounding area. At the same time, the Municipality of Thessaloniki carried out maintenance and upgrades to the garden’s mechanical systems. This intervention forms part of the broader strategy to continuously upgrade the New Waterfront and strengthen public green and recreational spaces, contributing to environmental balance and quality of life in the city.
Delivery of Three DEI Mini Pocket Parks
The Municipality of Thessaloniki delivered three new DEI Mini Pocket Parks, enhancing neighborhood-level greenery and creating small, accessible public spaces for rest and social interaction within the dense urban fabric. The parks are located in the Municipal Unit of Triandria (Ethnikis Antistaseos & Sarafi), the 1st Municipal District (Iasonidou & Agiou Dimitriou), and the 3rd Municipal District (Tzacheila & Konstantopoulou).
The DEI Mini Pocket Parks were implemented through the generous donation of DEI, which undertook their design, construction, and maintenance in collaboration with local authorities. This initiative forms part of the Municipality of Thessaloniki’s broader strategy to expand green infrastructure at the neighborhood level, contributing to the aesthetic and climate upgrade of public space and to increased urban biodiversity
New Playground in the 2nd Municipal District
The Municipality of Thessaloniki delivered its sixth new playground within a year, this time in the 2nd Municipal District, thanks to the donation of the Fais Group of Companies. The new facility provides a modern, safe, and well-equipped play area for children and families in the neighborhood, contributing to the improvement of daily life and the quality of public space. This intervention is part of the municipality’s ongoing urban strategy, with targeted upgrades in local neighborhoods—especially in areas that remain a clear priority for the city administration.
Redevelopment of Alkminis Park in Charilaou
The fully renovated Alkminis Park, located behind the “Kleanthis Vikelidis” stadium in the Charilaou district, has been delivered in full operation. Thanks to the donation of PARKOTECHNIKI S.A. and Trace and Chase S.A., a new playground for older children was created, the existing playground was completely refurbished, and a new basketball court was constructed. At the same time, the Municipality of Thessaloniki enhanced the green space with the planting of 30 new trees and carried out a comprehensive aesthetic upgrade of the area. With 1,200 sq.m. of new greenery and upgraded infrastructure, Alkminis Park now serves as a modern, accessible, and welcoming space for children, families, and residents of the neighborhood.
Creation of the “Drosia” Pocket Park in Ano Poli
As part of the Municipality of Thessaloniki’s initiative to create new pocket parks across the city, the “Drosia” Pocket Park was delivered to the public at the intersection of Bouboulina and Hesiodou Streets in Ano Poli. The project was made possible thanks to the donation and collaboration of ENGAIA and addresses a critical need for more greenery in an area with limited open space. The new park offers a welcoming and well-designed public space, contributing to improved microclimate conditions and enhancing the quality of life for local residents.
Creation of Playground at Kallithea Square, Ano Poli
A new playground at Kallithea Square in Ano Poli was delivered to the citizens of Thessaloniki in September 2025, thanks to a donation by the Papageorgiou Foundation. The space was designed with a focus on safety, accessibility, and respect for the historic character of the neighborhood. In addition to the playground, the square underwent a broader revitalization, including the planting of trees and flowers, as well as the installation of lawn areas — all contributing to the overall upgrade of the public space.
Two Bicycle Repair Stations on Thessaloniki’s Waterfront
Two new, modern bicycle repair stations have been installed along Thessaloniki’s waterfront, strategically located in front of the Garden of the Setting Sun and near the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. These stations allow cyclists to carry out minor repairs on the spot, enabling them to continue their journeys smoothly and encouraging the use of bicycles as a mode of transport. This initiative is part of the Municipality of Thessaloniki’s broader plan to promote sustainable mobility, enhance public infrastructure, and reduce the city’s environmental footprint.
Renovation of the Outdoor Basketball Court on Fragkon Street
Through the initiative and donation of Cosmos Sport Group, the outdoor basketball court at the start of Fragkon Street was fully renovated and delivered as a modern, safe, functional, and accessible sports facility. The refurbishment works included repairing and repainting the playing surface, replacing and upgrading basketball hoops, repairing backboards and rims, and installing benches. This intervention has transformed the court into a revitalized hub for sports and recreation in the heart of the city, enhancing accessibility and the quality of athletic facilities for all.
New Playground at Pedion tou Areos Park
Thanks to the donation of a private individual who chose to remain anonymous, a new, modern, and fully accessible playground was created at Pedion tou Areos Park. This formerly neglected space has now been revitalized with new infrastructure, high-quality play equipment, upgraded lighting, and a safe, inclusive design that welcomes all children. This initiative is part of the Municipality of Thessaloniki’s broader effort to provide functional, safe, and accessible play spaces throughout the city’s neighborhoods.
Mass Tree Planting in Ano Toumba and Triandria
The Municipality of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with SKAI’s environmental initiative “Oloi Mazi Boroume” and the Reforestation Directorate of Central Macedonia, organized large-scale tree plantings in the peri-urban forest of Ano Toumba and in the Municipal Unit of Triandria. A total of 2,000 saplings were planted, including a variety of hydrophilic and Mediterranean species such as oaks, Judas trees, ash, acacias, and wild olives, with the active participation of volunteers of all ages. These actions are part of the city’s strategic plan to expand urban greenery and promote environmental awareness, especially through citizen engagement and youth involvement.
Planting of 500 New Trees on Thessaloniki’s Waterfront
The planting of 500 new trees on Thessaloniki’s waterfront, in the park of Alexander the Great next to the Royal Theatre, was made possible through the generous donation of the Macedonian Paper Company as part of its corporate social responsibility program. This initiative, following the planting of 700 trees at the city’s Zoological Garden, is part of the Municipality of Thessaloniki’s ongoing plan to enhance urban greenery and promote a more sustainable and livable city. The trees planted include species such as Judas trees, ornamental plum trees, plane trees, and ornamental cherry trees, contributing both to the environmental quality and the visual upgrade of the city’s seafront.
Reconstruction of the Playground and Redevelopment of Kaoudi Square
The complete reconstruction of the playground and the overall redevelopment of the surrounding area at Kaoudi Square, in the 5th Municipal District, were made possible thanks to the generous donation of Giorgos and Zoi Papageorgiou. This intervention significantly contributed to the creation of a safe, well-designed, and functional space for children and families in the neighborhood, enhancing social cohesion and quality of life in a historic area of the city. The donation stands as a meaningful example of civic responsibility and contribution to the common good.
Melinikou Park Upgrade
The Tornivoukas family fully funded the planting of 100 new trees (plane trees, cypresses, and oriental planes), along with a series of technical interventions in the public space of Melinikou Park on Ethnikis Amynis Street. This initiative is part of the broader effort to enhance urban greenery and improve the aesthetics of public spaces, making a positive impact on citizens’ everyday life. The donation stands as a strong example of corporate social responsibility and active contribution toward a more sustainable and people-friendly city.
Installation of Public Water Fountains
Eighteen new water fountains were installed along central streets, the New Waterfront, the White Tower, and City Hall areas in collaboration with EYATH. The goal is to ensure access to clean drinking water for all, improving public space quality and contributing to a more sustainable city.
School Crosswalk Markings
The Municipality of Thessaloniki and Hellas Direct are upgrading school crosswalks as part of the "Safe Roads" project. By April 26, interventions were carried out at 17 locations across the city.
Volunteer Graffiti Removal
A volunteer-led initiative to clean unauthorized graffiti, keeping our city clean and beautiful.
Restoration and Beautification of the New Waterfront
Thanks to the initiative of the Cultural Society, the New Waterfront has been returned to the public, transformed into a cultural space. This initiative proves that when there is a spirit of contribution and aesthetic vision, we can achieve many small victories for our city.
Amphipoleos Pocket Park
This 170m² park includes 456 plants (mainly aromatic herbs such as lavender, thyme, rosemary, oregano, and viburnum) and trees (lime, plane, bitter orange). Urban equipment was upgraded, and natural materials were used exclusively — minimal concrete and no cement. The park is lit using renewable energy for “smart” lighting.
Tree Planting in All Municipal Communities
We promote tree planting in public spaces, parks, and urban areas, improving air quality, reducing the urban heat island effect, and creating green, friendly environments that enhance citizen well-being and environmental sustainability. In the first year, over 8,000 new trees were planted.
Tseliou Playground
The playground, named “Neni’s Joy,” was constructed with a private donation. The space was enclosed with a new wall and fencing and outfitted with certified play equipment, safety rubber flooring, and urban furniture including benches, a drinking fountain, waste bin, and signage.
Municipal Nursery at the Thessaloniki Port
The new nursery on Pier A was created in a fully renovated building and courtyard, fully funded by Alumil. The facility includes two toddler sections and one infant section, accommodating up to 46 children.
